Christiansen's 1947 purchase changed the course of his company. He purchased a plastic injection molding machine that allowed them to produce plastic toys in greater numbers and a wider variety.
Ole Kirk Christiansen
Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter, was the person who invented LEGO the company that was created in Billund, Denmark, in 1932. In the years before the Great Depression hit, Ole Kirk Christiansen decided to design wooden toys using the wood left over in his workshop. The first toys he created were mini ironing boards and stepladders, which he sold under the Danish name "leg godt" (play well).
In 1942, the shop and its blueprints were destroyed by a massive fire. As a result of the responsibility he had for his employees, he began to build up.
Christiansen purchased a plastic molder in 1946. He came up with an idea for a plastic block when he was experimenting with his new machine. Godtfred, his son, would later use this design to design the modern interlocking block. Its enthralling click coupling has become the basis of the most popular construction toys around the globe. Christiansen passed away in 1958 shortly before his invention changed the toy market worldwide.
The very first Lego set
The very first Lego set, the Town Plan was a set comprised of roads that could be constructed using Lego bricks. This was the beginning of the vibrant element of play Godtfred believed was vital for children and that is still a tenet of the Lego Group today.
In 1947, the company made an important purchase that would revolutionize the entire company with a plastic injection molding machine. The sets that resulted included plastic fish, plastic sailor and binding bricks that were automated that were the precursors to today's Lego blocks we use in the present.
The first LEGO building figures were produced in the year 1975. With a height of four bricks it resembled a miniature robot with peg-hands that were very different from what is used now. There were more than 50 prototypes before the design that was perfect was created and the minifigure came out. The next step was to include wheels on the figures, which opened up a whole new realm of play.
Lego Bricks - The Very First Lego Bricks
The very first Lego bricks weren't the interlocking blocks that would become the brand's most recognizable. Instead, they were made of plastic "automatic binding bricks." These had flat tops with an axle, and an open bottom which could be used to hold a piece of wood. They were made by a process known as plastic injection molding, in which the melted plastic is pressed into a mold.
These bricks were not an immediate success. Due to poor sales the bricks were often returned. But Godtfred persevered, and after a chance meeting with a buyer from overseas He saw the potential of developing a toy set that would be interconnected.
The company introduced its first Lego human figures in 1974 which later evolved into the small posable bricks that we have today. In 1975, Lego began selling more advanced sets for older children that would later be called Lego Technic. The sets included small components like gears, universal joints and levers. The stud-and-coupling system was introduced, allowing Lego pieces to be linked to form more intricate designs.
The very first Lego People
While they're the most well-known part of Lego sets of today, the minifigures were not a major invention until much later in the history of the company. The very first Lego minifigures were released in the late 70s or in 1975, to be precise.
The figures were based off astronauts and police officers which were both a lot more realistic than the toy soldiers that were already available. It was a major improvement that made Lego sets more interesting for kids.
It was also the first time that LEGO introduced different skin tones, although it would take a while before they got around to adding female heads that weren't one with a white face. In 2002 the first female head with smiley faces were released. It's been almost 30 years since a head coded as old was added. They're getting better however, they have some way to get there.
