The purchase made by Christian Christiansen in 1947 will forever alter the course of his company. He purchased a molding machine, allowing Christiansen to make plastic toys in greater variety and in greater quantity.
Ole Kirk Christiansen
Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter was the one behind the creation of LEGO, which was founded in Billund, Denmark, in 1932. As the Great Depression hit, Ole Kirk Christiansen decided to create wooden toys out of the wood left over in his workshop. The first toys he created were mini ironing boards and stepladders, which he sold under the Danish name "leg godt" (play well).
In 1942, the shop as well as all the blueprints destroyed in a fire. However, in the spirit of resolving his responsibility to his workers the shop was rebuilt the shop.
Christiansen purchased a plastic molder in the year 1946. As he was experimenting with the machine, he came up with the idea of making an plastic brick. His son Godtfred used this idea to develop the interlocking brick. Its gratifying clicking coupling is now the foundation of the world's most loved construction toy. Christiansen died in the year 1958 the year prior to his invention revolutionizing the global toy industry.
The first Lego set
The very first Lego set, the Town Plan was a set comprised of roads that could be covered with Lego bricks. This was the birth of the dynamic aspect of play Godtfred believed was so important for children and is still an integral part of the Lego Group today.
In 1947 the company made a huge purchase that would change its entire business with a plastic injection molding machine. The sets that resulted included plastic sailor, plastic fish and bricks with automatic binding - all precursors to the Lego blocks that we use today.
The first LEGO building figures were made in the year 1975. With a height of four bricks it was shaped like a tiny robot and had peg-hands that were different from what are used today. It took 50 designs before the concept was perfected and we witnessed the first appearance of the minifigure. Next was to add wheels to the figures, opening the door to a whole new world of play.
The first Lego bricks
The very first Lego bricks were not the interlocking plastic blocks that would later be the brand's biggest draw. Instead, they were plastic "automatic binding bricks." They had flat tops, with an axle and an open bottom that could hold pieces of wood. The "automatic binding bricks" were made by using the process of injection molding which saw melted plastic put into a mold.
But, they weren't successful. Due to low sales and a large number of bricks being returned. Godtfred persisted and after meeting a buyer who was from the other side of the world, he saw the potential of creating an interconnected toy system.
The company released its first Lego human figures in 1974, and later developed into the smaller posable bricks that we have today. In 1975, Lego began selling more advanced sets for older children, which would ultimately become known as Lego Technic. These sets had small parts such as gears, universal joints and levers. The stud-and coupling system was introduced, which allowed Lego pieces to be joined to form more intricate designs.
The first Lego People
Despite being the most popular element of Lego sets, they weren't an innovation of any significance until the latter part in the history of the company. The very first Lego minifigures were released in the mid 70s, or in 1975, to be exact.
They were based on astronauts and police officers that were both more realistic than the toy soldiers currently available. It was a huge improvement that made Lego sets more appealing to kids.
It was also the first time that LEGO introduced different skin tones, although it would be a while before they actually got the chance to add a female head that wasn't a white face. In 2002, the first female heads that had smiling faces were released. It's been almost thirty years since the first head that is coded as old was added. They're improving however, they have some way to go.
