Tips for Choosing the Right LEGO Sets
When Ole Kirk Christiansen began making wooden toys, stepladders, and ironing boards at his home workshop in Billund, Denmark, he likely never imagined that his colorful bricks would be one of the most popular toy companies in the world.
He and his son Godtfred were able to rescue Lego from a calamity by directing the Lego in a different direction.

Ole Kirk Christiansen
Ole Kirk Christiansen is a Danish carpenter, who grew up in a tiny village situated on the edge of the countryside. He made his love for whittling into one of the world's most loved toys. The construction toys, known as LEGO bricks that are found in more than 130 countries around the world are loved by kids as well as adults.
In 1924, Ole's woodworking shop was completely destroyed by a fire. The fire was started by Ole's two sons who had started the flame with shavings of wood. Despite a loss of materials, Ole rebuilt and soon the company grew by offering wooden toys.
In the heyo-craze of the 1930s, the manufacturer produced a lot of yoyos, which weren't sellable. The business was nearly insolvent. Vejle Bank provided a loan which was repaid and Ole was able to re-build the factory. Leg Godt, which is Danish for "play well", was renamed to reflect the new direction taken by the company.
Godtfred Christiansen
Godtfred Kirk Christiansen died in his home town of Billund, Denmark. He was the son of a businessman who helped his father grow his business of making wooden toys into an empire that spans the globe. He was 75.
Godtfred chose to focus the business on plastic toys following a fire caused destruction to his family's wooden warehouse. His brothers, Karl and Gerhardt--who had been the directors of plastic and wood product manufacturing respectively--disagreed.
Godtfred was traveling on a boat to London when he ran into an interested buyer. He suggested that rather than creating exclusive toys, manufacturers of toys could create a system that sets of toys are interlocked. That led to the development of the modern Lego stud-and-tube design, patented on January 28, 1958.
The Kiddicraft brick
In the 1940s, a firm named Kiddicraft introduced the "Kiddicraft Self-Locking Building Bricks". These were hollow rectangular plastic blocks that had four studs that were placed on the top. The studs fit snugly into the studs of another block.
Kirk Christiansen, Godtfred and Godtfred and a British manufacturer of the first injection molding machine were shown these bricks by a salesman in order to show the kinds of toys that they could design. No matter if Kirk was aware that the bricks were patent-pending or not He copied them and dubbed them Lego. It was the start of a toy industry that is still worth billions of dollars today. Hilary Fisher Page committed suicide in 1957, when she was the creator of Kiddicraft.

The Lego bricks have become one of the most well-known toys around the globe. Their popularity stems from the fact that they are safe for children, durable and flexible. They can be integrated into anything from city structures to spaceships, and have inspired many projects by children all over the world.
Godtfred developed the concept for his stud-and tube system from a conversation with a toy purchaser. The buyer suggested toy companies create a system where sets of toys could be interconnected and used to build different types of structures. The Lego system was born from the idea. In 1971, sets with furniture and dollhouses were introduced. The company also expanded its transport options with boat and ships with hulls that floated.
The Town Plan
Lego's Technic series, which featured mechanical parts with detailed details set the standard for the 80s. Nine years later it introduced the Minifigure citizens of yellow which are featured in play sets with themes. That same year, Lego introduced Duplo, a line of larger blocks for kids that aren't able to handle the smaller bricks that were originally used.
Today, Lego is a global toy empire that has 10 theme parks as well as an animated movie franchise. Although it has expanded the company has managed to keep a loyal base. This loyalty is rooted in the fact that Lego is less of an uncompromising commercial venture rather than a familiar family member.
Ninjago is a popular theme that has been adopted by many.
Lego has become far more than a simple toy. In 1998, Lego was named Toy of the Century. It beat out teddy-bears and Barbie. The company has a huge media empire, with books, TV shows, and theme parks.
The company also offers a line of programmable robots known as Mindstorms that have been instrumental in shaping the company's educational strategy. Its underlying educational theory that was influenced by Seymour's constructivism, is that kids learn best through building things.
Ninjago is currently the main theme at Lego conventions and also the film inspired massive collaborative builds. The style of the original set, Ninjago City 70620, has also shaped the design of other LEGO themes.
