Ole Kirk Christiansen
Founded in Billund, Denmark in 1932, LEGO was the brainchild of carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen. When the Great Depression hit, Ole Kirk Christiansen decided to design wooden toys using the wood left over in his workshop. The first products he made were mini ironing boards and stepladders they sold under the Danish name "leg godt" (play well).
In 1942, his business and its blueprints were destroyed in a firestorm. In the name of his workers, he built up.
Christiansen purchased a plastic injection molder in 1946. As he was experimenting with the machine, he came up the idea of creating a plastic brick. Godtfred, his son, was later to use the design to develop the current interlocking block. Its enthralling click coupling has been the foundation of the most popular toys for construction around the globe. Christiansen died in 1958, shortly before his invention revolutionized global toy manufacturing.
The first Lego set
The first Lego set, the Town Plan was a set comprised of roads that could be covered with Lego bricks. This was the start of the dynamic element of play Godtfred believed was so important for children and is still an integral part of the Lego Group today.
The company bought a plastic injection molding machine in 1947. This purchase would revolutionize its business. The resultant sets comprised automatic binding bricks, a plastic fish and a plastic sailor, the earliest versions of the Lego blocks that are still in use today.
The first LEGO building figures were produced in the year 1975. At four bricks high it resembled a miniature robot, and had peg-hands which were different from what is currently used. It took more than 50 prototypes before the design was perfected and we were able to see the debut of the miniature figure. Next, the figures were fitted with wheels, which opened up an entirely new play area.
Lego Bricks - The First Lego Bricks
The first Lego bricks were not the interlocking blocks made from plastic that would later become famous. They were "automatic-binding bricks" made of plastic, with a flat bottom and an axle on top. They were made through a process known as injection molding, in which melting plastic is forced into molds.
These bricks were not an immediate success. A lot of them were returned due to poor sales. But Godtfred did not give up, and after an opportunity meeting with an overseas buyer He saw the possibility of creating a toy system that would be interconnected.
In 1974, Lego released its first Lego figures in 1974. Then, they evolved into the smaller posable blocks that we see today. In the year 1975, Lego started selling sets that were more intricate for older kids. The sets would later be referred to as Lego Technic. The sets included small components such as gears, universal joints and levers. The coupling and stud system was introduced to allow Lego pieces to be joined to form more intricate structures.
The first Lego People
Although they are the most popular component of Lego sets of today, the minifigures were not an important innovation until later in the history of the company. It wasn't until the mid-70s, 1975 to be exact, that the first Lego people - or minifigures - went into production.
The figures were based off astronauts and police officers which were both a lot more realistic than the toy soldiers already available. This was a major leap forward, and could create Lego sets more exciting for kids.
LEGO also released skin tones for only the first time. However, it took a long time before they introduced women's faces that were not white. The first female heads pictured smirking were introduced in 2002. it's been nearly 30 years since they introduced the head that was coded as old which means they're not quite where they need to be when it comes to diversity. But, they're getting better.
